Homeschool Meme/Or, My Modleing Portfolio

Since I am still relatively new to this whole blogging thing, I just found out about the Homeschool Meme awesomeness a few days ago (Thank you, Crafty Cristy, for tagging me!).

Also, I have decided that I need some extra cash for the resource (listed below) that I would like to buy. Since I cannot leave home to make money, I thought that modeling for online homeschool products might pan out. I have included some subtle portfolio pics, just to give you a taste of my rad modeling skilz. I did my best to not take away from the products being advertised.

So, without further a-do:

HOMESCHOOL MEME:

1. One Homeschool book you have enjoyed: Ummmm...never read any. Ten years ago, I checked out a few from the library. I thumbed through them, and that was as far as I got. I was homeschooled, and the books I kept finding were basically describing what I had lived my whole life. This is NOT to say that I didn't need guidance. I still do. Nothing I read was new, fresh, or helpful.

That was life changing...I know. You're welcome. ;)

2. One resource you wouldn't be without: Pencils. And my homeschool friends. And Shurley English. I bet you already have pencils and friends, so if you would like to know more about Shurely English, go here: https://www.shurley.com/ It will totally rock your grammar world. Like, (comma) totally! (Exclamatory sentence.)

ROCK ON!

3.One resource you wish you had never bought: The Writing Road to Reading by:Romalda Spalding.
My phonetic thoughts on this book:

I hated this book from the moment it was introduced to me in a "how to homeschool" satellite program (which we are no longer a part of). I don't have a pic of it, because I threw it out. Throwing out books is against my religion, aside from ones that irritate me more than nails on a chalkboard. I did like the flash cards that came with the book. I have found them to be extremely helpful for teaching reading AND spelling, so I strongly suggest you purchase them.

YES, I do!

4. One resource you enjoyed last year: Saxon Grammar and Writing 8. You can find that here: http://saxonhomeschool.hmhco.com/en/products/default.htm?level2Code=M0007 Shurley English only goes up to 7th grade, so I as frantically searching for a substitute. What was I going to do without SHURLEY??? We have been together since the beginning. *sigh* I was delightfully surprised to see how thorough Saxon grammar was. I highly recommend this program (don't worry, Shurley, my younger students are still with you). If you like Saxon math, which we use, then I think you will agree this is a top notch curriculum.

I'm sorry, you don't feel like doing grammar today?

Not acceptable.

5.One resource you will be using next (this) year: Oh, that one's easy: The Picture Smart Bible. You can pick it up here: http://www.picturesmartbible.com/ It is truly made for every age level. My kids are 7, 12, and 15. We do this Bible study together, and there is something for everyone. What an incredible imagination this ministry has!

Moses would recommend this.
Forget telling Moses, "No."
Unless, of course, you like frogs...a lot.

6. One resource that you would like to buy: This is another easy one: Oklahoma History Online. Why don't ya'll pick 'er up at this here site(?): http://www.oklahomahomeschool.com/okhist.html

7. One resource you wish existed: The Self-Cleaning House.

If you don't know why I want this...

...we can't be friends...

...sorry.

8. One homeschool catalog you enjoy reading: My Father's World. The only other Curriculum that I think I could be happy with is Sonlight. But why ditch something that is working? The My Father's World company truly cares about their customers. I know this first hand. And reading their catalog is a little like Christmas.

First, I was like:

Then I was like:

And I've been broke since (but it is worth it).

9. One homeschooling website you use regularly: Geeze. Just ONE!?! Okay...well, since I only get to name one, I am going to name drop. I have this fantastic friend, Mary Ostyn, who is like the fairy god-mother of homeschool moms. I mean, this gal has the magic touch (and books to prove it). I love her because she is sweet, smart, real, experienced (10 kids, ya'll), funny, a talented photographer, and a great cook. I could go on and on. Seriously.
I invite you to her site: Owl Havenhttp://www.owlhaven.net/ You will not regret it.

Mary & Me
See. That's her...and me. My friend, Mary.
In case you missed that part.

She is just a click away.

10. Tag other homeschoolers: Hmmm...gee, I wonder who comes to mind?

  1. Mary Ostyn: http://www.owlhaven.net/
  2. Angel Weir: http://thevoiceofadventure.blogspot.com/ (One of my biggest encouragers, and the genius inventor of "Night Owl School.")
  3. Tina Hollenbeck: http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/ (This is one smart cookie.)
  4. Wendy Slatt:  http://unpavedroads.net/ (If you love beautiful photos, farm life, and helpful life lessons, you'll love her blog. Oh, and she's a sweetie too.)
A special "thank you" to Crafty Cristy:  http://craftycristy.blogspot.com/
Girl, you totally blessed my socks off. This is why I blog, to meet wonderful people like you. Your words and encouragement put a smile on my face through a very rough weekend. God bless you, friend!

To all who read my blog: THANK YOU! Your kind words, and support make this mommy feel pretty loved. I hope that you know you are loved too.

Oh, and if you know of any homeschool modeling agencies who will let me work out of my home, here are a few more pics:

Heck, ya! I've SO got this!

Cheering you on & checking the fuel gauge,
Layla

  3. BAHAHAHA! I can honestly say that is the first time I have received that compliment! Thanks. And no hurry on posting. I am confident that you have the brain cells to do it, but time is hard to come by. I actually googled some other Homeschool Meme posts, before I wrote this one. I really had no idea how to go about it. Totally new concept for me...but fun. :)

  5. Oh, yay! So happy to meet you, Flamingo. I'm glad I cracked you up & didn't scare you. My husband asked if I was on something when I posted this. LOL

I LOVE My Father's World, but have had to tailor it a tad for my two youngest students. There is a lot of wiggle room for that, plus you get to choose your own math, spelling, and English. They also write your lesson plans FOR you! They saturate every lesson with God's Word, and stay true to their mission. If you ever call MFW for info, you will see how much they value their customers. That's a rare thing these days. You can tell it's not about the money for them. And, yes, their catalog makes my heart skip a beat. We are using an accredited high school course for my oldest, but I still ordered some of the MFW 9th grade books to add depth, and spiritual growth/enrichment, where I felt it was needed. (He's in a secular accredited high school course.)

I hope you stop by again. I enjoy reading everyone's comments.

    You made me smile. :)
